Description

View of "Hartman No. 5" a hydraulic pumping unit. Museum records indicate that this is at Ventura Oil Field, Getty Oil Company.

Description from back of photo: "Hydraulic lift pumping units are designed for pumping wells from 8,000 feet to 12,000 feet deep. Their length of stroke ranges between 20 and 30 feet and they only operate at 4 to 8 strokes per minute compared with walking beam type units which run around 18 or 20 strokes per minute with 3 to 8 feet length of stroke. The power for lifting the sucker rods is obtained from a piston inside the long vertical cylinder which is lifted in the same manner a hydraulic jack can be used to raise your family automobile. The large round ball is a spherical reservoir for the light oil used to lift the piston."
