Description
Brown toned flat finish outdoor photograph mounted on 35.5 x 30 cm brown cardboard. Photograph depicts photograph reproduced on page 134 of the book Of California's First Citrus Empire: A Rainbow Arches From Maine to Ventura County. Writing under photograph in book is as follows: "Before her stately, plantation type Olivelands residence Mrs. Claire Ramsey is revvying up her 'chug-a-mobile' for a gala spin with her slightly remonstrating husband. A floral paradise, this Shangri-La is affording the Ramseys a 'wide screen' vista of tropical grounds. Spreading out in the broad expanse lay the largest walnut orchard in the world, comprising over five hundred acres, and still farther in the distance the great fields of the extensive bean ranches in the bottom land of the Santa Clara Valley."
On the back of the photograph is written: "The Ramsey House, an elegant landmark on NW Foothill of Limoneira Ranch. By the 1960's, this historic residence, under appreciated tragically declined to a fragile ruin; a foreman's family lived in a section of it, but then Bees seemed to be the main proprietors. This classically designed board domicile appeared to be the queen manor of Olivelands previously and afforded a superlative view of the Santa Clara Valley. A great ancient Havana Lemon tree once towered on the NW side of this 'memory', and said to have been a 'cradle' for its buds, for much of Limoneira's root stocks! -- Dean Hobbs Blanchard, Sat. July 26th, 1980."
