Description

Thomas A. Rice, portrait bust, oval picture taken out of frame. Caption at bottom of photo reads: "Thomas Alexander Rice, 1876."
Museum exhibit card information: "At the age of ten years, Mr. Rice crossed the plains in a covered wagon from Independence, Mo. The large party drove a large herd of cattle. The Rices settled in Contra Costa and went into cattle raising. He married Lillian Flournoy of Santa Clara County. In 1876 they moved to a ranch of 470 acres three miles from the present town of Oxnard. The ranch was left him by his father. His first wife died in 1897 and he afterwards married Miss Morarity, a school teacher in the Ventura city schools. Mr. Rice did much in the building of Oxnard and bringing the sugar factory to that district, and some of his land comprises Oxnard. Politically he was a Democrat and served a term as state assemblyman. He was appointed state horticultural commissioner by Governor Gage. He refused the nomination as lieutenant governor."
