This house, constructed in 1944 at 204 South Coronado Street, launched the career of Southern California developer Paul W. Trousdale. Trousdale was a USC dropout with no training or experience in architecture or construction when he proposed building 181 houses in the Hartman and Jones Tracts. The City of Ventura approved the project in order to provide emergency housing for defense workers.. Both tracts had been platted in the late 1920s but by 1944 they were only partially developed due to the economic depression of the 1930s and then restrictions and material shortages during World War II. This house, located in the Hartman Tract, was the first of the 181 proposed by Trousdale who was doing business as the Ventura Defense Housing Company. The two-story residence in the backyard was added circa 1992.

After the housing project in Ventura, Paul Trousdale went on to build more than 1,000 homes including those in the development he is best known for — Trousdale Estates in Beverly Hills.
