[User contributed description] Carmen Ramirez worked tirelessly to protect local beaches and the Santa Clara River from inappropriate development and other human disturbances. She was a major influence in getting some bad behaviors reduced at Ormond Beach. This western snowy plover represents all the native wildlife species that benefitted from her efforts. I remember her attending a meeting at someone's home of a group I volunteer for that documents the washed-up animals on beaches for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. Wherever Carmen could help the health of beaches, which in turn benefits local citizens, she would.
