A weekly walk with friends at the Ventura Harbor Nature Preserve (aka the settling ponds) is a tradition we started during the Covid pandemic. It is a place of such beauty and serenity. Great Blue Herons, Night Herons, Egrets, and Ducks inhabit this small preserve year round. Early spring and fall are marked with the arrival of the White Pelicans along with many other migratory species.
Sadly, our city government is intending to fill in this habitat and drain the ponds that are home to so many species of birds and a place of respite to those that stop by on their way to summer or winter homes. Soon these ponds will no longer exist and we will have lost yet another important ecosystem. All that will be left by this time next year are memories captured by photos such as this one.
