Description
A view of an apartment building located at 187 West Mission Avenue in Ventura, California. An early 1980s historic resources survey by Judy Triem and a team of volunteers indicated that the building was begun in 1929 but not completed until 1943 by Roy C. Wilson, a prominent Santa Paula architect. It is completely out of character with Wilson’s other work.
The one-story appendage on the east side of the structure is particularly unusual and jarring. Even in 1982 when it was photographed as part of the survey, it seemed out of place and a detracting element. At that time, there was some ornamentation that tied it in with the two-story part of the structure, but all of that has been stripped away in the intervening years. Now, the appendage seems even more out of place with its flat stucco surface and two small vinyl-clad windows in the front wall. In 1982, cast concrete lions stood on either side of the stairs but they are no longer present.
