Video footage of events in the life of Herman Keene, a lifetime resident of Santa Paula, California. He was born on December 26, 1878 and died on December 24, 1965. Black-and-white footage, some disturbing and graphic, of a wildfire and burned areas, trapping, hunting, fishing, rattlesnakes, skinning animals, camping, and a dead body of a child being pulled from water. There are 3 of the same film, with very minor differences.
Keene cooking in camp; Wildfire; Burned Murietta La Carpa Trail/Billiard Flats signs; Burned deer carcasses; Soot or oil in creek, water is black; Dead fish in mud; Mountain lion in trap, still alive; Horse being led down steep and very rocky terrain, sheer cliff; Live mountain lion in net on horseback; Keene fishing; Boat on ocean, sportfishing; Rattlesnake being caught and milked; Rattlesnake striking at booted foot; Gnarled tree; Keene skinning animal, possibly coyote; Unknown taxidermized animals in tree; Keene smoking pipe by car; Raccoon with collar climbing tree, dogs barking at it; Crowd watching swimmers pull dead body of child from water; Mountains and trees; Bear running away; Team of 6 horses hauling equipment; Cat killing squirrel; Camping scene with taxidermized mountain lion; Loose rattlesnake; Keene washing face in creek; Keene removing boots, pretending to sleep, releasing snake, and then hitting it with boot; Keene shooting mountain lion with bow and arrow; Two snakes put in box together to fight; Car driving up steep hill; Keene drinking out of a water bottle outside cabin, exterior of cabin covered in stretched animal hides; Still shot of photograph; Woman and two children exiting house to greet Keene at his car, Keene takes dead mountain lion from the trunk of the car and shows to family.
