Description An account of the resource A three-quarter view looking northwest at a small grocery store located at 403 North Olive Street in Ventura, California. According to a City of San Buenaventura building permit, Mrs. Minnie Carubajal applied for and was issued a building permit on October 27, 1927, to construct a store on a portion of her corner property (northwest corner of West Harrison Avenue and North Olive Street). She already owned a house on the lot, which had been constructed in 1926. The current (2026) address of that house is 413 West Harrison Avenue. Because of the existing house, the store had to be squeezed onto a small portion of the lot between the house and the sidewalk along North Olive Street, resulting in facility that was only fifteen feet deep but 42 feet long. On August 15, 1949, an application by Mrs. O.C. Rich for permission to construct a “store room” addition was approved. The addition added eight feet on the north end of the existing building. As can be seen in this photo, the addition is lower in height than the original building and has a small window and door. A 1930 city directory for Ventura indicates that the store was called M & M Grocery. The business operated under a variety of names after 1930, including Andy’s Grocery (Andy Copeland) and Your Friendly Market in the early 1950s, according to building permits as well as certificates of occupancy. Since at least 1970 it has been known as Lee’s Grocery. A beautiful mural adorned the south wall of the grocery store for a few years until it was painted over for unknown reasons. The mural was still in place as of April 2025 but, as can be seen in this photo, the only vestige of that effort is on portions of the former public telephone enclosure located against the wall. After the mural was destroyed, the former phone enclosure quickly became covered with graffiti. The demise of this mural is another example of the ephemeral nature of items in the urban environment. Description An account of the resource A photo of the facade of a commercial building located at 120 South Mill Street in Santa Paula, California. It is a brick building but the original appearance has been altered considerably. As depicted, the facade is coated in stucco. However, the building does have historical and cultural significance. Library records indicate that at one time the weekly publication La Voz de la Colonia as well as the Santa Paula Daily Review were housed in this building. The December 1929 Sanborn Fire Insurance Map for this section of Santa Paula labels the building as a “Printing” establishment. Ventura County Assessor records do not provide a construction date, but the structure was built after September 1923 and before December 1929. It is not shown on the Sanborn Fire Insurance Map dated September 1923. In that year a large wood frame house was on the property spanning what are now the 120 and 122 South Mill Street addresses. The neighboring brick building at 122 South Mill Street was constructed in 1927 according to assessor records. The first occupant was an auto repair and battery business. With the exception of the front doors, the building has maintained its original appearance. When built, double entry doors on South Mill Street were flush with the facade. Note: A cultural heritage survey conducted in 1980-81 estimated that it was constructed in 1929.
