The residence depicted in this photo was built in 1889 for J.A. Day (James Allen Day, 1828-1915), a Saticoy area rancher, investor and grocer in Ventura. The Poli Street house is one of the few extant buildings in Ventura constructed in the Stick-Eastlake style of Victorian architecture. It is located on the north side of Poli Street on parcel 72-105-04.

Having achieved success in the brick manufacturing business in Wisconsin, Day moved to Ventura in 1874 where he made significant real estate investments. Mr. Day reportedly owned more than 800 acres of land in Ventura as well as an 80-acre ranch on Telephone Road east of Harmon Barranca. In partnership with three other individuals, J.A. Day built the Masonic Block on Main Street where he opened a grocery store on the ground floor.
The Jesse Allen Shaw House was constructed in the Victorian style in 1888. The structure has been almost completely altered since it was built, including being stuccoed over. However, the house does have historical significance. Quoting from a historical survey performed in 1983, “The house is significant for it was built for Jessie A. Shaw who came to Ventura in 1868. J. A. Shaw, a carpenter-builder, constructed many of Ventura’s earliest buildings and was mayor of Ventura from 1869-1870. This was Mr. Shaw’s second house. The first was located on Santa Clara Street. The house was probably built by Selwyn Shaw, J. A.’s son, in 1888.”
