The complex consists of two separate buildings, the Ventura Theatre (at 26 South Chestnut Street) and the adjacent Ventura Theatre Building (visible on the north end at the corner of Chestnut Street and Main Street). They were originally designed to look like one building in the Spanish Revival style. Constructed during the so-called first oil boom in Ventura, the theater opened with much publicity and fanfare on August 16, 1928. Currently, the theater facility is primarily used for live concerts and is known as The Majestic Ventura Theater. The commercial and office portion at the north end succumbed to 1950s “modernization,” as did much of downtown Ventura, resulting in removal of the decorative work along with changes to the original windows and entrances. Designated as San Buenaventura Historical Preservation Commission Landmark No. 24. The Ventura Theatre portion is on the National Register of Historic Places.
