Depicted in this photo is a building constructed in 1960 for the Standley Paint Company. Prior to moving to this location, the business had been located since the early 1950s on the west side of the street at 369 North Ventura Avenue. Founded by Cleo R. Standley, the store sold home, automotive and industrial paints. Standley also operated a compressor sales and service operation at 65 Fix Way in Ventura.

From circa 1980 until 1998 the business was owned and operated by Marilyn and Dennis Watters. The paint business merged in 1998 with D’angelos Industrial Coatings, an Oxnard company. That same year, the Watters opened Ventura Motorcycle Company in the building that had long served as a paint store. The building was vacant when this photo was taken in 2025.]]>

This photo depicts the former Avenue Elementary School, located at 2647 North Ventura Avenue in Ventura, California. Consisting of 24,000 square feet of space it sits on a 7.44 acre site on the west side of North Ventura Avenue. This view is looking northwest from North Ventura Avenue. It is a Spanish Colonial Revival building that has a red tile roof. North Ventura Avenue traffic lanes visible in the foreground.

When the Ventura Avenue oil field came into production during the 1920s, workers and their families flowed into Ventura and the Avenue area. The school was constructed (1924-1928) because of a need for additional school facilities to serve the burgeoning population on the Avenue.

When this photo was taken, the school buildings were vacant and fenced for security purposes. The month before this photo was taken, the Ventura Unified School District issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) to sell, lease or develop the site for educator workforce housing.

A view looking west at the former Avenue Elementary School. The south wing, middle section and a portion of the north wing partially enclose a courtyard area that is open on the North Ventura Avenue side. A colonnaded porch wraps around the three wings providing shade and shelter at the perimeter of the courtyard. Although not visible in this view, there is another courtyard in back of the middle segment. The very large tree in the center of this picture is growing in that courtyard. North Ventura Avenue traffic lanes are visible in the foreground.
