Description
An account of the resource
Black-and-white footage of a family gathering, featuring men and mostly women of a variety of ages, along with occasional footage of orchards, a shooting range, and a chicken farm.
The footage opens with a gathering of men and women in formal clothing, standing in a field and, later, in front of a home. They play with a dog, pose before cars, throw small balls or fruit to each other, and wash a baby in a birdbath. Some of these family members later visit a zoo (possibly Goebel's Jungleland in Thousand Oaks), and feed an African lion cub and deer. Two young children embrace an elderly woman, two others stand in uniforms (one perhaps a Boy Scout), and several other children ride what look like early skateboards downhill, seated. Elsewhere, a young man fires a pistol at a board, and another man examines a tree in an orchard. The footage closes with several farmworkers loading crates of chickens onto a wagon.

Description
An account of the resource
Black-and-white footage of camping and general frontier life, some disturbing and graphic, featuring a variety of animals, interspersed with scenes of activity in and around a newly developed town.
Men cook, roll cigarettes, pose for portraits in campsites; some camps are set along dry hills, others in the shade beside small creeks. The longest section of the camping footage focuses on one elaborate creekside campsite, with a large tent, shaded dining area with a hammock, a private bathing area. Later, men guide horses to a campsite with a large flagpole, bearing an American flag and a plaque that reads, "Forest Fireman Station – Maps, Information and Campfire Permits."
In town, the camera focuses on a large, two-story house, and captures various men posing in front of it. Various people are pictured in front of their homes; men socialize in the street. Later, a small café appears, with a neon sign noting "Dick's Sandwiches." An employee in a clean white paper hat, shirt, and apron steps outside and poses before the building.
One section shows a zoo or wildlife preserve of some sort, where men inspect a snake, an African lion cub, and a field of beehives. Elsewhere, men feed and pet donkeys and horses before large barns. One man feeds a large crowd of swans and other birds; another man guides a small wagon driven by (and full of) dogs. A taxidermist examines a dead mountain lion; a kitten studies a dead coyote. A small child climbs onto a stuffed mountain lion (later became part of the Museum of Ventura County collection). A bearded man in a cap, possibly Herman Keene, later poses beside the same taxidermized lion.

Keene Reel 17, Family Vacation Footage
Description
An account of the resource
This reel's footage includes a succession of short scenes that mostly show people of various ages on vacation:
A large group gather for miniature golf and an elaborate picnic deep in a wooded area, beside a wood cabin. Families drive to and from vacation areas near rivers and lakes, children in tow. People feed and play with chickens on small farms. A couple visit the United States Capitol building in Washington, D.C.; the camera lingers on ships and ferries.
Toward the end, a man dressed in a suit walks along a dirt path, and two women pack luggage into a Ford Model A car before driving into the distance.

Keene Reel 16, Oxnard-Santa Paula Football Game, Parades
Description
An account of the resource
This reel primarily includes black-and-white footage, along with one color scene. Most of this footage shows a men's football game between Oxnard and Santa Paula High Schools, perhaps at Santa Paula High School, and local preparations and celebrations before and after the game. The footage opens on the field's sidelines, where players and a coach from one team react to the game. The camera then surveys the substantial crowd gathered in the elevated stands above the field. A pan across the school parking lot, packed with cars and departing crowds, emphasizes the scale of the event.
Black-and-white footage of football practices on the same field follow this sequence. After this practice, girls in white dresses and small angels' wings walk in a file across the field, perhaps in preparation for a parade. The next scene shows a young marching band practicing its routine on a residential street, with craftsman homes and hills in the background.
The next sequence is shot in color, and features a parade through the streets of Santa Paula. Servicemembers bear American flags, men in Western wear ride horses, and a local American Legion marching band performs a routine. The scene afterward captures a group portrait of a Santa Paula's American Legion band and some candid footage of the band preparing for a seated performance.
